What have I achieved since joining PCF?

I have achieved 2 big things since joining Crossfit – You see when I heard about Crossfit I was at a low point in my life physically. I was 273 lbs. and I was 8 months away from turning 50. I was looking at a doctors report that said I have borderline high blood pressure and I am pre-diabetic based on my weight. I looked at Crossfit as my last shot at getting in shape. I set a goal for myself of getting to 225lbs by the time I turned 50. You see I was 225 at 25 and thought it would be cool to be 225 at 50. I really never thought it would happen but I always set my goals high so I figured even if I fell short it would be great.

I started the workouts doing everything exactly the way the coaches explained – and they were great at making sure I did not over do it and get hurt. I told Tyler at evaluation that I am 49 but I think I am 25 when I get in a competitive environment. He said all the coaches would make sure to keep me in check. – and they did. I started losing weight but I kept remembering one thing Tyler said during my on ramp – YOU CAN NOT OUT WORK A BAD DIET – so I decided I needed to take it to the next level. I met with Ryan and he did an evaluation of my diet and worked with me to tweak my diet to maximize my weight loss without losing strength.

The weight started coming off and I realized I might really be able to accomplish my goal of being 225 at 50. Well March 27th I turned 50 and on that day I weighted 225 !!! I cannot tell you the feeling I had when I stepped on the scale at 50 weighing 225 – 48 lbs less then when I started Crossfit !! I have transformed my body in just 8 months – I owe a big thanks to Dom Squiciarino for introducing me to Crossfit – I am a Crossfit junkie now !! I tell anyone who will listen what Crossfit has done for me. Oh and I can’t forget my other achievement – I did a pull up. I remember when I did my first unbanded pull-up Tyler said “Hey Bob, was that your first pull-up since joining Crossfit?” I said “No it was the first pull up in my life.” – I was the fat kid in gym who hung on the bar never able to do a pull up – not anymore – I now can do 5 pull ups !!!

The results I have seen?

The results i have seen in 7 months of Crossfit are nothing short of a miracle! 1 yr post knee surgery i could only manage steps one step with one foot at a time while holding onto the railings for dear life, i had to hold on to furniture to lower my body to sit or hold on to furniture to push my self to a standing position, i had to hold on to the car door and push up with my arms to get out of my car…within 3 weeks of group classes at crossfit..i could actually go up a step almost normally! Thats when the workouts became about being strong and healthy and not about losing weight. Now i can squat below parallel, Lunge without falling over, jump a 20″ box, jump out of my car, run up and down steps without holding a railing!

I was diagnosed in December 2011 during on ramp classes with High Blood Pressure..140/90 my Heart rate 86 by april 2012 my Blood pressure was 114/70 my heart rate 72. I used to drink 10 cups of coffee with coffee shots a day just to have energy, now i drink 1 cup and bounce thru my day with tons of energy. I started at a size 16 in Jan 2012, as of Aug 4 I am in between a 6-8, I have lost 30lbs..27inches total from my body..6inches from my waist alone. Can you tell i am Happy? I am very happy with my body and how strong i have become! I am Happy and content with my Life!

My favorite part?

The Community! I have to say from the moment i walked thru PortCrossfit doors there was a positive atmosphere! My Coaches truly scaled the workouts to my ability and NEVER made me feel less than, they always made me believe I COULD! My classmates are the same as my Coaches always cheering me on to finish even though i was always the last one finished! At PortCrossfit your only a stranger once, after your first class you have become part of the PortCrossfit family. In every class my coaches gave me the opportunity to succeed and i gained tremendous confidence, my physical ability soared!

Since joining PCF I have gotten rid of my man boobs and have been getting more stares from the ladies.

What do you hope to accomplish?

I hope to accomplish things such as keeping up with my young, hot girlfriend, keeping off my belly fat and continuing to show up at crossfit so I can continue to eat my hungry man sandwich.

How Did You hear about PCF?

I heard about crossfit from one of my college buddies who has been training at the crossfit in Rockville Center. I saw the success he was having with it and decided I needed to join and start making some positive changes in my fitness levels. I really struggled when it came to choosing a location because I did not know anyone that could recommend a place to me that was close to home. I saw the website and read up on the bios of Ryan and Kyle. When I read how they were both athletes, I figured they had to have similar mentality to training as I do. I knew this would be the place that I would check out first. After coming in that first day I never looked at another spot. Since then I have been constantly reminded on the right decision I made.

Outside of the great workouts, the motivation that is provided by all performance coaches is exactly what I was looking for. The people that I have met here make it a lot more enjoyable and easy to come every day. I find myself looking forward to see them and having some good conversation and laughs. Having been doing this for almost 5 months I cannot imagine going back to country club style gym workouts.

I would say one word that describes me is determined. That determination helped me to accomplish some of my goals thus far with crossfit. When I first started I was in a real bad place with my weight and fitness. A place I had never been before and would have mocked even the thought of being. I weighed just about 250 lbs and was eating all the wrong foods. I had such a negative view of myself which lead to depressed feelings. Looking back I could see how this view and feelings only helped to make me function poorly as a father, husband and business owner.

Since starting PCF I have dropped over 30 lbs, I am eating healthy and I believe I am better at home and at my job. I am so much happier and I think that is benefiting all aspects of my life. I have made some positive strides towards my other goals I hope to accomplish.

What have I achieved since joining PCF?

Oh boy where to begin… Well to start, my confidence in myself as a person has increased tremendously. I would never go to the beach for fear of taking my shirt off. When I went in a pool I would wear a shirt or a rash guard and make up some stupid excuse of why I’m wearing it.

With that said because of crossfit I have lost about 40 lbs and built up my confidence. So much so that when given the opportunity in the future I will more than willingly take my shirt off at the beach or when going into the pool or at the mall…anywhere really! BOOM!! Yea, I’m that confident.

My strength has increased to a place I never thought it could go. I’m doing strict pull-ups and pushups. I did my first rope climb ever on vacation visiting another box. My PR’s just keep getting bigger and bigger.

Also, in high school when we had to run the mile in gym, I was so fat and lazy that I would pretty much jog a minute or two and walk the rest resulting in a 15-20 minute mile. I’m now able to run a consistent 10 minute mile. This is a huge advancement in my awesomeness!!! Look at that more confidence just sprouting from my fingertips as I type.
